Botulinum toxin Botox injections Brighton and Hove

Botulinum Toxin Consultations and Treatments for Facial Expression Lines in Brighton and Hove

A doctor-delivered care pathway

At Noaem Skin every consultation and treatment for facial expression lines is carried out by Dr Christopher Vary.  You will not be assessed by one practitioner and seen by another.

Dr Vary is a GMC-registered doctor with a clinical background in anaesthesia and critical care.  He examines how the muscles across your face work together before deciding which treatment is most suitable.

Botulinum toxin, commonly known as Botox, is a prescription-only medicine that temporarily reduces the activity of selected facial muscles, allowing the expression lines they cause to soften.

IN BRIEF

  • Appointment time: usually 30-45 minutes, including clinical assessment.
  • Anaesthetic: not normally required.
  • Downtime: Usually minimal, although temporary swelling, redness or bruising can occur.
  • Results begin: Usually within 3-5 days
  • Full effect: Usually assessed at 2-3 weeks.
  • Duration: Several months, although varies according to amount used and individual response.
  • Treatment Course: Not required as a course, with 3-4 treatments per year generally required to maintain results.

IN DETAIL

Botulinum toxin temporarily interrupts the nerve signals that cause selected muscles to contract.  As muscular activity reduces, expression lines gradually soften.  The effect is temporary.  Nerve signalling returns over the following months and muscular activity gradually recovers.  Treatment does not add facial volume or alter the structure of the face.

Following assessment, botulinum toxin may be used for:

  • Horizontal forehead lines
  • Frown lines between the eyebrows
  • Crow’s feet or smile lines around the eyes
  • Lower-face and neck concerns, assessed individually
  • Concerns involving the lip and mouth area

Facial muscles work in relation to one another, so treatment is not planned by selecting areas from a standard list.  Dr Chris considers the complete pattern of movement before recommending which muscles to treat.

Lines that appear principally during facial movement are more directly influenced by muscle activity.  Lines that remain visible when the face is relaxed may also reflect changes ini skin quality or facial structure and may not soften completely with this treatment.

Dr Chris will explain which aspect of your concern is related to movement and whether botulinum toxin, a skin quality treatment, or another approach would be more appropriate.

Every appointment begins with a face-to-face clinical assessment by Dr Chris. If treatment proceeds, the injection stage usually takes less than five minutes. Small raised areas may appear at the injection sites and usually settle within 30 to 60 minutes.

Strenuous exercise and alcohol should be avoided for 24 hours. Temporary redness, swelling, bruising or headache may occur. Rarely, temporary weakness of nearby muscles can develop. Dr Chris will discuss specific risks before treatment.

The result is assessed once the effect has fully developed, usually at two to three weeks.  Dr Chris reviews the balance of facial movement and whether the result remains appropriate to the original treatment plan.  Further treatment is not assumed or automatically recommended, although occasionally additional small additional units of botulinum toxin can be used to optimise results.

Botulinum toxin is a prescription-only medicine.  Dr Chris reviews your medical history, current medicines and any previous reactions before prescribing.  Active infection at an intended injection site, certain neuromuscular conditions and some medicines may also affect suitability.

Botox cannot be used anyone who is under 18 years of age, who is pregnant or breastfeeding, or who has a history of adverse reactions to the drug Botulinum toxin.

Why consult Dr Chris at Noaem Skin?

Every stage of your care is provided by Dr Chris, from the initial assessment and prescribing decision through to treatment and review.

His medical background informs how he assesses facial anatomy, muscular balance, suitability and risk.  Rather than treating an isolated line or following a standard injection pattern, he looks at movement across the face and how altering one muscle may affect another.

No treatment is assumed before you attend. Dr Chris will recommend only treatment he believes it is medically suitable and capable of addressing your concern.

Noaem Skin is an independent doctor and pharmacist-led clinic at 193 Portland Road in Hove, within Brighton and Hove.

Frequently Asked Questions

Botox is a brand name for a botulinum toxin product. The term is widely used to describe this type of treatment.  Dr Chris will discuss the medicine being prescribed as part of your consultation.

Eliminating facial movement is not the aim.  Dr Chris plans placement and amount around your anatomy and natural expressions, with the objective of softening lines while retaining character and movement.

Most patients tolerate the injections very well.  The needles are fine and anaesthetic cream is not normally required.

For many patients, movement gradually returns over approximately three to four months, although duration varies according to the medicine prescribed and the individual response.

No.  The purpose of the consultation is to assess your concerns, facial movement, medical history and suitability.  Dr Chris may recommend treatment, or suggest a different approach.

How to Decide if Botox is For You

It’s probably time we talked about the big B in the beauty and aesthetics industry. Botox injections receive a lot of bad press but the reality is that it’s probably the most misunderstood treatment of them all.
