BBL HEROic and MOXI can be performed within one appointment when changes in skin colour occur alongside uneven texture or wider sun damage.
BBL HEROic uses selected wavelengths of broadband light to address suitable brown pigmentation, persistent redness and visible vessels. MOXI is a non-ablative fractional laser that works across the treatment area to improve uneven texture, diffuse pigmentation and early visible changes associated with sun exposure.
So why combine them?
Combining them allows each technology to address a separate component of the skin within one treatment plan. It may be appropriate when sun spots or redness are accompanied by roughness, early fine lines or a more general decline in skin quality.
The combination is not automatically preferable to either treatment alone. Clinical assessment and Observ520x imaging establish whether both technologies would add useful value.

How the combined treatment works
BBL HEROic and MOXI use different forms of light energy and perform separate roles.
BBL HEROic
BBL HEROic is broadband light rather than a traditional laser. Selected wavelength filters allow the treatment to target melanin within appropriate brown pigmentation or haemoglobin within visible redness and small vessels.
The targeted structures absorb the light energy and are altered by heat. Pigmentation may temporarily darken before being cleared gradually, while vascular redness can become more noticeable before it settles.
MOXI
MOXI is a non-ablative fractional laser with a wavelength of 1927 nm. Its energy is absorbed primarily by water within the skin, creating microscopic treatment zones while leaving surrounding tissue untreated.
This controlled fractional response supports renewal within the treatment area. It may improve diffuse pigmentation, rough texture and early visible signs of photoageing.
Using these technologies together
At Noaem Skin, BBL HEROic is performed first and MOXI follows during the same appointment.
The benefit is not that one technology makes the other more powerful. BBL HEROic addresses appropriate colour changes while MOXI works across the surface and superficial layers of the skin. Both components can therefore be treated without arranging two separate appointments and recovery periods.
Who may benefit
The combined treatment may be recommended when the same area shows:
Sun spots alongside uneven texture
Persistent redness with broader sun damage
Visible vessels accompanied by rough or uneven skin
Early fine lines occurring with appropriate pigmentation or redness
Treating only the colour component may leave changes in texture unaddressed. Equally, using MOXI alone may not be the most direct approach when distinct sun spots or visible vessels are also present.
The combination is not required for every patient. BBL HEROic may be sufficient when pigmentation or redness is the main concern. MOXI may be more appropriate on its own when diffuse pigmentation, texture or broader skin quality is the priority.
Where melasma is suspected, BBL HEROic is not routinely included. A MOXI-led plan with appropriate skin preparation may be more suitable. Skin tone, recent tanning and susceptibility to post-inflammatory pigmentation also influence whether both technologies can be used safely.
Assessment and Observ520x imaging
The consultation includes Observ520x clinical skin imaging. Different light modes help reveal patterns of pigmentation, redness and sun damage that may be less apparent during examination under ordinary light.
The findings are interpreted alongside your medical history, recent sun exposure and clinical examination. This establishes whether BBL HEROic, MOXI or a combination is most appropriate.
Imaging is repeated at each treatment and reviewed when selecting the areas and settings to be used. A further scan is completed four weeks after the final session so that progress can be compared with the original baseline images. If including either technology would introduce unnecessary risk, an alternative plan will be recommended.
Topical anaesthetic cream is applied as part of the preparation for MOXI. Once it has taken effect and the skin has been prepared, protective eyewear is provided.
BBL HEROic is delivered first. A clear gel is applied before selected settings are used to address the pigmentation or vascular changes identified during assessment.
The gel is removed and MOXI is then delivered across the treatment area using a series of controlled passes. The handpiece monitors its movement and coverage as the fractional laser energy is applied.
BBL HEROic usually creates brief sensations of warmth. During MOXI, patients commonly notice increasing heat and light prickling. The treatment itself normally takes between 45 and 60 minutes, depending on the area.
The complete appointment is longer because it also includes assessment, preparation and time for the anaesthetic cream to work.
The skin will look red immediately after treatment and may feel similar to sunburn. Mild swelling can also occur.
Pigmentation treated by BBL HEROic may initially become darker. MOXI normally creates a dry, rough or lightly bronzed texture that becomes more apparent during the following day.
This textured surface usually sheds gradually between days three and five. It should be allowed to clear naturally and must not be picked, scrubbed or exfoliated.
Once the skin has settled, it may appear clearer and feel smoother. Further improvement develops over the following weeks and across the corrective course.
A course usually consists of at least three treatments spaced four weeks apart. Additional sessions may be recommended where vascular changes or more established sun damage require further treatment.
Maintenance does not necessarily mean repeating both technologies. BBL HEROic or MOXI may subsequently be used alone according to what remains visible in the skin. The combination is repeated only when both continue to have a useful role.
The combined treatment cannot be performed on recently tanned skin. Fake tan must not be used on the treatment area during the four weeks before the appointment.
Tell the clinic about recent sun exposure, planned travel or medication changes because treatment may need to be postponed. Retinoids, exfoliating acids and other potentially irritating products must be paused as advised.
After treatment:
- Allow darkened pigmentation and the MOXI texture to shed naturally
- Use the post-laser skincare routine recommended by the clinic
- Avoid exfoliation and irritating active ingredients until advised
- Apply broad-spectrum SPF50 and limit direct sun exposure
Makeup can usually be applied after 24 hours if the skin is intact and recovering normally.
Combined corrective courses are normally planned between September and June. The precise timing depends on tanning, anticipated sun exposure and weather conditions.
Combination Treatment FAQs
It addresses more than one type of skin change, but the visible recovery is usually determined by MOXI and lasts approximately three to five days. BBL HEROic may add temporary darkening of pigmentation or make redness more visible initially.
MOXI can be used across a broad range of skin tones. The BBL HEROic component requires a separate assessment of skin tone, tanning and pigmentary risk. MOXI alone may be recommended if including BBL HEROic would introduce unnecessary risk.
BBL HEROic is not routinely included when melasma is suspected because unsuitable light and heat treatment may aggravate the condition. A MOXI-led plan with skin preparation and careful management of contributing factors may be more appropriate.
