How to Prep Your Skin Barrier for Winter: Hydration and Protection Tips

The clocks have changed, the colder weather is creeping in and if we’re not careful our skin will pay the price. Winter can be hard on it. The harsh cold and wind outdoors causes stress to our skin which means it’s less able to maintain balance and can increase the likelihood of blemishes. Then the artificial central heating we’ve all grown accustomed to zaps the air of humidity and draws moisture from our skin. Not to mention the constant temperature change as we go from one to the other – this quite often causes more dryness and breakouts.

Unfortunately we can’t do much about the British winter, but we can prep our skin barrier, giving it the best chance to keep our skin hydrated and protected throughout the coldest months.

Skin Barrier is the New Buzz Word

Skin barrier seems to be the new buzz word in skincare but there’s a reason it deserves so much care and attention. So, what is the skin barrier exactly? The skin barrier is the top layer of skin which prevents moisture loss, acts as a physical blocker against irritants and bacteria and maintains balance of the skin’s natural oils and pH levels. If your skin barrier gets damaged, that’s when you might see dryness and flaking, redness and irritation or suffer from breakouts or skin conditions like eczema. Often this happens as a result of over-exfoliation, harsh cleansers and external stressors like the cold weather.

So, what can I do to protect my skin barrier?

Limit the Use of Harsh Products

In the colder months, it’s best to move away from stripping or exfoliating cleansers that can strip the skin of its natural oils. Choose a gentle, hydrating cleanser that supports your skin’s pH balance instead. A soothing cream or balm cleanser can help maintain your natural moisture barrier while still removing impurities. Cleansing should leave your face feeling soft and refreshed, not tight or dry.

Be careful with products that contain acids as they can worsen dryness and compromise your skin barrier. These can be found in toners and serums as well as cleansers so check everything.

As winter is a time that we encourage people to ramp up their retinol use, it is important to understand that it can cause dryness too. Using a good barrier boosting moisturiser is essential if you experience retinoid associated dryness. It is also important that use of acids is dialled back in this situation.

At Noaem Skin in Brighton and Hove, we always recommend focussing your winter skincare routine on products that nourish rather than strip.

Add in Those All-Important Barrier-Boosting Ingredients

When your skin barrier is under pressure, think of ceramides, squalane and fatty acids as your best friends. (But if these all sound like jargon to you then feel free to book a consultation and we can talk you through the right products for your skin!) These ingredients help to rebuild and reinforce the protective layer that keeps irritants out and moisture in. Products containing niacinamide can also calm redness and strengthen barrier function over time. These are ideal for those prone to winter flare-ups or sensitivity.

So, how do I add these ingredients to my skincare routine?

Winter skin thrives on hydration so try to incorporate a hydrating serum with ingredients like hyaluronic acid, niacinamide or panthenol before your moisturiser. This will help to lock in water and strengthen the barrier. Follow with a ceramide-rich moisturiser that mimics your skin’s natural lipids to seal in moisture and protect against the elements.

For an extra boost, try applying your moisturiser while your skin is still slightly damp – this helps trap hydration and gives your complexion a dewy, healthy glow, even on grey Brighton mornings.

Protect Your Skin Indoors and Out

Central heating can be just as drying as the cold air outside. A simple tip is to purchase a humidifier for use at home or in your office to restore some moisture to the air. When stepping outside, apply a barrier cream or rich moisturiser to protect your skin from windburn and environmental stress. And don’t forget SPF – UV rays can still be strong in winter, especially if you’re spending time by Brighton and Hove’s esplanade where the light reflects off the sea.

It’s also important to note that although scarves and wooly hats are great at protecting us from the cold, scarves that cover the lower portion of our faces and hats that sit too low on our foreheads can trap oil and encourage breakouts. The best thing is to ensure you’re washing them regularly and choose items made of natural fabrics as much as possible to allow your skin room to breathe.

Don’t Underestimate Stress and Sleep

Winter isn’t just tough on our skin; it can be demanding on our minds and bodies too. With shorter days, busy schedules and festive plans filling the calendar, it’s easy to feel run down or overstimulated. And it’s also tempting to skip the skincare routine if we get home late but don’t! Consistency is everything! And when we’re tired or stressed, our skin often shows it first, appearing dull, reactive or more prone to breakouts as our body’s repair processes slow down.

Prioritising rest is one of the simplest (and most overlooked) ways to support your skin barrier health. Aim for consistent sleep, embrace slower evenings and allow your body to recharge. Mindful downtime, whether it’s a quiet walk along the Brighton seafront, a long bath or simply switching off your phone early, helps reduce cortisol levels and gives your skin a better chance to renew overnight.

Book a Winter Skin Treatment

Sometimes, your skin just needs a little professional help to rebalance. A barrier repair treatment like a hydrating facial can make a huge difference in restoring comfort and radiance during winter. At Noaem Skin, we offer tailored facials designed to soothe, strengthen and deeply hydrate the skin barrier – helping you maintain a healthy glow all season long.

A polynucleotide treatment can be the perfect option for strengthening the skin barrier over the colder winter months. Polynucleotides work on a cellular level to repair and regenerate skin tissue, helping to restore balance and resilience from within. By improving hydration, supporting collagen production and calming inflammation, they help the skin better withstand the cold, dry air and temperature changes that often trigger irritation or sensitivity. The result is a healthier, more radiant complexion, one that’s naturally equipped to retain moisture and stay hydrated all winter long.

Alternatively, if you’re seeking expertly curated product recommendations, we wholeheartedly endorse the ALLSKIN | MED Skin Barrier Range – a collection powered by the exclusive antioxidant complex Reoxderm®. This range prevents oxidative damage and supports your natural skin processes, restoring resilience in just a few weeks.

You’ll find these premium formulations available at Noaem Skin Clinic on Portland Road, so you can start building your strongest skin now.
